Miyawaki Tiny Forests: Rapid Reforestation in Small Urban Spaces

A Miyawaki Tiny Forest is a high-density, ultra-diverse “pocket forest”. Invented in Japan, this method is increasingly being used in urban spaces around the world as a planting method able to quickly increase canopy in cities.

By prepping the soil and planting young native trees, shrubs, and wildflowers very close together in layers, we mimic how a wild, old-growth forest works. Because the plants are so close, they “compete” for sunlight and grow 10 times faster and 30 times denser than a regular park or backyard. Within just a couple of years, it becomes a self-sustaining ecosystem that takes care of itself.

Our Living Learning Lab

Our flagship Tiny Forest is located at the Localeaf Gardens Learning Lab. This is where our volunteers help us track growth, monitor soil health, and care for the forest saplings as they establish their roots.

Everything we do is rooted in “learning by doing.” We observe how different species interact and document the results so we can refine our methods for the rest of the community.

Grown Locally, Planted Together

This season, we have two new Tiny Forests planned for the Aylmer area. What makes our forests special is their lineage:

Some early sprouts of Eastern Redbud, Red Maple, Jack Pine, Kentucky Coffee Tree, American Elm and a few other species hiding behind
  • Grown from Seed: Every tree we plant is started right here at the Localeaf nursery, grown from locally sourced and nearby seeds.
  • Resilient & Native: We are locally rooted, with a learning laboratory here in Aylmer that allows us to observe the resilience and performance of multiple species locally, in a tiny forest setting.
  • Community Driven: While we help guide, plan and facilitate the creation of new Tiny Forests here in Aylmer, these are community events, where volunteers, neighbours, teachers, students and multiple generations of community members come together to prepare, plant and continue caring for selected sites, learning together throughout the process.

Let’s Plant One Together

We have access to locally grown young trees, shrubs and forest floor plants, we have the knowledge, experience and capacity.

If you have a schoolyard corner, a park lawn, or a community space that needs a burst of biodiversity, get in touch. We are always looking for new partners to help us grow Aylmer’s canopy, one tiny forest at a time.
