The Aylmer Heritage Association, celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2025, hosts a Butterflyway pollinator garden at its historic premises at 495 chemin d’Aylmer. This stop connects Aylmer’s built heritage with its ecological heritage, demonstrating that preserving the past and restoring native habitat go hand in hand. The garden introduces native pollinators and plants to visitors exploring the association’s archives and heritage walking tours.
Unfortunately, since planting, it was discovered the site was being invaded by Japanese Knotweed, a very aggresive invasive species wreaking havoc in our ecosystems. The city of Gatineau is working on a remediation plan for the site, but the habitat garden plants had to be removed in the process. We have opted to leave this here in the hopes of raising awareness for the damage that invasive plants can do.
