Jardins Localeaf Gardens (Canoe Planting)

The anchor stop of the Butterflyway, Jardins Localeaf Gardens is the social enterprise native plant nursery that grew and donated a large portion of the plants found in the Butterflyway stops across Aylmer today. It is also home of the Localeaf Learning Lab and Native Seed Orchard, where all the plants for these stops were grown from locally sourced seed. Many of those seeds have been harvested and packaged by Pollinate Aylmer volunteers, and found their way in the gardens and care of many local residents through the Aylmer Seed Project, as well as through our events like Seedy Saturday and (upcoming) Seedling Sunday at the time of writing.

The signature “canoe planting” — a repurposed canoe filled with native plants — has become an iconic symbol of the project. The Learning Lab serves as a permanent outdoor classroom for many Canopée workshops, as well as community seed harvesting, tiny forest research, and biodiversity monitoring. It is the engine behind the entire Butterflyway Aylmer corridor and the Canopée Localeaf mission.
